The History

When he was young, Giovanni Ferrari, worked as miner and then as bricklayer. In 1959 he became building contractor and opened a construction company together with his brother Carletto that died soon after.

Ginin worked principally in the area of TraregomViggiona where he realized the “Panoramica Ferrari” by building a long street with holiday houses and bringing water and electric energy in one of the most beautiful area of the Lake Maggiore.

It was the period of the “Economic Boom” when Ginin, recognizing the potential of the upper Lago Maggiore’s area, built almost 300 holiday houses for foreign clients.

The clients, that arrived mostly from Germany, including important people, found in Trarego Viggiona local hospitality and friendliness that made the place an ideal “nest” for their holidays. Ginin was the pioneer that brought light into the area through tourism after the post-war.

To continue and to complete his work the 5 daughters opened in 1985 the real estate agency “Immobiliare Ginin” in Cannobio. Then they started working in the more wide area of Cannobio, Valle Cannobina, Cannero-Riviera, Ghiffa and Verbania.

  • Ginin a Trarego Viggiona

Cannobio is the last town on the shore of Lake Maggiore before the Swiss border. Today it is one of the prime tourist resorts in the VCO province.

The original centre of the town, known as the “Borgo”, begins from the ancient Via al Castello and takes the visitor into a timeless world of old houses, flights of steps and lanes leading down towards the lake front. These narrow streets, shut in by high buildings, were designed to protect the inhabitants from hostile incursions from the lake.

Cannobio’s lakefront is one of the finest promenades on Lake Maggiore. Starting from the southern end (called “Amore”), the first thing to notice is the marble sculpture of a lion, made by Giulio Branca in memory of the successful defence of the burgh against attack by the Austrians in 1859. Farther on you can explore the area of the old fisher houses before ending up in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, the square that is the main meeting place in the town. The other colourful buildings adorning the lakefront, with their picturesque porticoes, boutiques and bars, date from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Cannobio is also well-known for its Lido, a broad, well-appointed beach which is a magnet for bathers and sunbathers, as well as water sports enthusiasts.

Behind the town a road leads into the mountains of the Cannobina Valley, a paradise for hikers and lovers of unspoiled nature; the valley is part of the Val Grande National Park. Don’t miss the natural spectacle of the Sant’Anna Gorge, cut deeply into the rock by the rushing Cannobino river.

  • Lago Maggiore

The upper Lake Maggiore area covers the northern part of the lake from Cannobio, the last town before the Swiss border, to Ghiffa, just outside Verbania. From their setting between green hillsides and blue waters, the four main places in this area, Cannobio, Cannero, Oggebbio and Ghiffa, enjoy spectacular views of the Swiss, the Lombard, and the Piedmontese shores of the Lake. In true Italian style, each community has its own history and traditions.

Ghiffa has a Hat Museum and the Sacro Monte of the Holy Trinity, a Baroque complex of chapels in a superb position above the lake. Cannero Riviera, on the road to Switzerland, boasts a marvellous view of the Malpaga castles, the so-called “Castles of Cannero”, picturesque ruins occupying two little islands near the shore. Here nature and art come together in perfect harmony.

The lakeside road (State road 34) is lined with mansion houses and their gardens, while perched in the hills above, the little villages keep their age-old character and traditions.Farther towards the Swiss border, from Cannobio a road twists and turns up the Cannobina Valley, which extends for 11,000 hectares from the lake shore. The valley’s landscape is varied and full of fascination: from the bare slopes of Monte Limidario, at 2,189 metres the highest point in the valley, to the sheer cliffs and deep, green waters of the Orrido or Gorge of Sant’Anna at Traffiume not far from Cannobio.

The Borromean Gulf is the name given to the arm of Lake Maggiore extending from Verbania to Stresa. It includes the marvellous Borromean Islands as well as the hills behind Verbania. Art and nature come together in perfection to produce the beauty of the Borromean Gulf. Human interventions over the centuries have intelligently enhanced the landscape, both on the islands and on the shore.

The last part of the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore goes from Belgirate to Castelletto Ticino, and possesses a variety of places of artistic and cultural interest. The little Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Belgirate is a fine example. In a dominating position above the town, it dates from the 12th century. Massino Visconti boasts the sanctuary of San Salvatore, at the end of a 4 km-long scenic road on a hillside of birch and beech woods. The lakeside road (State road 33) is lined with a succession of mansion houses set in luxuriant parkland.
