The Il Monastero complex will be the product of a project of regeneration and redevelopment of a large prime site in the town of Cannobio, measuring 12.000 square metres and covering a good part of the town’s historic centre.
The existing built area hosts the former monastery of the Ursuline Sisters of Saint Justina, comprised of a main external building and a central countryard in the shape of a cloister. The complex overlooks the Shrine of Santa Maria, a pilgrimage destination, and the lake promenade, with its weekly markets.
As well as the renovation of the former monastery, the project also involves the costruction of a variety of residential, commercial, hotel, social and health care buildings, green spaces, parking lots and pedestrian areas.
The availability of services, the various possible uses, the diversity of the architectural design and the presence of human congregation facilities will cause the town’s centre of activities and social life to shif towards the new complex, creating a single residential, commercial and social hub.
